Many people drive far distances to South of the Border or Pennsylvania to purchase fireworks for do-it-yourself backyard displays. Not only is this illegal, it can be very dangerous. For Jake, display production is more of a passion than a profession. He began his career early as a Theatre Stagehand at Riverside Dinner Theater in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Following a few years at National Events, setting up stage, lighting and sound systems in and around the nations capital, he relocated to Florida where he earned an associates degree in Show Production and Touring in 2005 from Full Sail University, one of the worlds leading schools in entertainment and arts. After graduation, he toured the country with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus as a lighting technician and pyrotechnic operator. While on tour, he suffered a spinal cord injury from a motorcycle accident and spent months in the hospital and rehab before returning home to daily life with the help of Jackson, his trusty service dog. Inevitably, Jakes love for pyrotechnics drew him back. As a hobbyist, he joined Pyrotechnics Guild International and the Crackerjacks fireworks club to learn more about fireworks safely. In 2008, he started designing displays using consumer grade fireworks, and by 2009 he was shooting class B, professional grade display fireworks. It was only a matter of time before his expertise and interest in pyrotechnics became a professional endeavor, and Southern Exposure Pyrotechnics was born.
